1. Material selection

2. CNC machining process selection
In short, custom machining is all forms of CNC machining - CNC machining milling, turning, EDM, etc. with the express purpose of making parts that don't exist elsewhere. Milling is a machining process that uses a rotating multipoint cutting tool to remove material from a part.
In CNC machining milling, a CNC machine usually feeds the part in the same direction as the tool rotation, while in manual milling, the machine feeds the part in opposite direction as the tool rotates. Operational capabilities of the milling process include end milling (cutting into workpieces with shallow, flat surfaces and flat bottom cavities) and peripheral milling (cutting into workpieces with deep cavities, such as recesses and threads).
    


Turning is a machining process in which a single point cutting tool is used to remove material from a rotating workpiece. In CNC machining turning, a CNC machining lathe feeds the tool in a linear motion along the surface of the rotating part, removing material from the circumference until the desired diameter is reached to create parts with external and internal cylindrical internal features, such as grooves, tapers, and threads. The operational capabilities of the turning process include boring, facing, grooving and thread cutting.
